Different Kinds of Glass for Roofing and Windows

Glass is used today for containers, infrastructure. and even sculpture. Glass was first formed from fulgurite, hollow glass tubes that form from sand struck by lightning. Sand is primarily made of grains of quartz; when the quartz is vitrified or exposed to extreme heat (and lightning is hotter than the sun!), it forms a crystalline substance primarily made with silica.



Silica (silicon dioxide) is the main constituent of glass. Other compounds are combined with silica to make glass of varying strength and durability. There are float glass formed while floating over a tin bath, laminated glass bonded with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin for added durability, and toughened glass that shatters in small square pieces when broken.



Laminated glass is primarily used for car windshields, but some house windows use laminated glass too. Laminated glass is specially used for curtain walls (glass walls), the glass panel on storm doors, or sliding glass doors. This glass is very tough because of its PVB constituent. When it breaks, spider web cracks are formed. It remains intact instead and does not fall into shards.



Toughened or tempered glass is used for curtain walls, car windows, and telephone booths. It is also very tough. When broken, the small pieces of glass do not cause too much injury in case people touch the shattered glass. It is also used for diving masks, bulletproof glass, and refrigerator trays.



Today, there are windows made of low emissivity (low-E) glass. This means that it emits low levels of radiant energy. Unglazed lass naturally has high emissivity, so it reflects less light; low-e glass is specially glazed to reflect ultraviolet light, filtering both light and heat from the sun. The
